Functional medicine is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.
By addressing root cause, rather than symptoms, practitioners become oriented to identifying the complexity of disease. They may find one condition has many different causes and, likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, functional medicine treatment targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual.

Uzma Zakir, RPh, bloomHigher
I’m Uzma Zakir, RPh, founder of bloomHigher. I am passionate about sharing my expertise on the healing benefits of the cannabis plant to educate and empower people on their brave choice to use cannabis as their medicine. By combining current research, my experience in treating patients in the CT MMJ landscape since 2015, and my traditional pharmacy background, I have developed a unique approach to patient care and speak extensively on best practices and cannabinoid science.
Cannabis as medicine is a controversial field that stands on decades of misinformation and propaganda, as well as centuries of documented medicinal use. I am a traditionally trained pharmacist and have been specializing in medical cannabis for eight years. I’ve had the honor to work with thousands of people to greatly improve their quality of life.
To be able to do this to the best of my ability and out of respect for my patients, I learned all I could about the human endocannabinoid system (ECS) and the purpose our endogenous cannabinoids serve in our physiology. Endocannabinoid deficiencies may contribute to many physical, mental, and emotional symptoms. I’ve developed a methodology to treat patients with phytocannabinoids to maximize the functions of the ECS to provide immediate symptomatic relief and long-term therapeutic benefits while avoiding unwanted effects.
The endocannabinoid system boasts over 20,000 scientific published reports since its discovery in the early 1990s. It is composed of endogenous cannabinoids named anandamide and 2-AG, cannabinoid 1 and 2 receptors, and degrading enzymes. Its title has recently been expanded to the Endocannabinoidome (eCBome) to include orphan receptors, transporters, and proteins, which indeed emphasizes its level of importance and ubiquity. It is a complex molecular signaling system with neuromodulatory functions throughout the body and brain to maintain homeostasis in systems such as the sleep-wake cycle, energy/metabolism, memory processing, stress response, pain thresholds, inflammatory response, and many more.
The cannabis plant contains more than 100 phytocannabinoids, and each cannabinoid interacts uniquely within the eCBome. THC, CBD, CBDA, THCA, CBN, and CBG are the top studied and widely available to the consumer. For example, THC interacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, while CBD interacts with more than 65 receptors.
The key to using cannabis medicinally is to understand the physiological effects of each cannabinoid, its immediate clinical effects, product integrity, and dosing. This is what I have been studying for the past eight years, and it’s why I founded bloomHigher.
In 2023, I presented at UCONN, xpoCanna, NECANN, the National Cannabis Festival, and the Cannabis Science Conference. I also hosted a popular monthly webinar until I left the corporate cannabis world to start my own endeavor to bring the plant back to the people. I am now in private practice in collaboration with two internal medicine physicians in Stamford, CT, at Ultimate Solutions Medical Spa. I provide care for those with chronic illnesses, anxiety, cannabis use disorder, autism, and much more. I am available for in-person and virtual sessions. I am also available for educational seminars.
