EcoTips – By Deb Percival
Summer is coming! Whether or not you have central air, now is the time to look into whole-house fans. In Connecticut, whole-house fans can eliminate the need for air conditioning, keeping your home as comfortable as a/c except during hot spells. If you have a/c, they can minimize your need to use it, saving money and helping the environment. (I’ve read they can cost ¼ to 1/10th of what a/c costs to run.)
Whole house fans are typically turned on at night, with windows open, pulling cool air in via a large, ceiling-mounted fan that expels the air into the attic, where vents carry the heat outside. In the morning, shut the fan off, shut the windows, and you’ll have cool air all day, except during the most extreme weather.
Many consider the noise the fans make to be nice white noise for sleeping, but if noise is an issue, minimize it by getting a bigger fan and running it at lower speeds. Either way, it’s a good idea to make sure rubber or felt gaskets are included in the installation.
If you have central air, you might be able to install a whole-house fan that will use the existing air conditioning ducts. These systems cut your electric bill dramatically and are usually very quiet. Call a HVAC professional to find out if this is an option with your system.
If you choose not to install a whole-house fan, consider an attic fan. Installed in an attic window and run at night, it will cool your attic, which keeps your house cooler day and night, and is good for the longevity of your roof. If you have a walk-up attic you can easily open the attic door at night, open your bedroom windows, and enjoy the breeze!
